How to Care for a Sunburn

If you get exposed to the harmful UV light of the sun, your skin will get damaged. Sometimes the effects of sun exposure don’t show early. They manifest later on in the form of wrinkles and fine lines that slowly begin to develop on the face. However, if you expose your skin too long to the sun’s UV rays then you are going to get a sunburn. A sunburn is characterized by pinkish or reddened skin which is hot to the touch. You might feel itching, tenderness, and pain and also see some swelling as well as small fluid-filled blisters forming on the affected area. If you have a sunburn, you can treat it easily at home. Here are some of the treatments that can help you care for a sunburn.

Cool Down Your Skin

Sunburns can make the skin hot, so you should look to cool it down. There are several ways of doing that. For starters, you can put a damp towel on the affected skin for about 10 to 15 minutes. You can also use a cold pack but make sure that it is wrapped in a towel. Secondly, it is a good idea to take a cool bath or shower. It will help with the pain. Make sure that you leave some water on the skin after your bath. You can trap this water in the skin by applying a moisturizer. It will also prevent skin dryness.

Don’t Touch the Blisters

If your sunburn has resulted in blisters then you shouldn’t try to pop them. These blisters are filled with fluid and if they burst, they can make the sunburn even worse. Moreover, your skin might get infected because of it as well. So, keep the blisters intact and let them heal naturally. It might take a few days for them to dry out on their own but you will remain protected from infection. If the blisters do burst, clean them using mild soap and water. Apply an antibiotic ointment on the blister site and use a non-stick bandage to cover it up.

Use Gels or Creams Containing Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a natural treatment for any kind of skin-related condition. It is also good for sunburns too. However, instead of applying it directly, you should try to use a gel or a cream that contains Aloe Vera. These creams can help in soothing the skin and accelerate the healing process. Calamine lotion could also be used for this purpose too. Make sure that you don’t use any petroleum-based lotions or creams. They will trap heat in the skin and make matters worse for you. If you are feeling too much discomfort in the affected area, you can make use of over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream.

Drink Plenty of Water

Sunburns can make you feel hot inside. There is a risk of dehydration in such cases as well because of all the dryness. So, make sure that you drink plenty of water while your skin recovers. Also, it is a good idea to remain indoors and stop further sun exposure.
